I'm absolutely thrilled with the never cover for my romantic-comedy novella, YOUR MAGIC TOUCH. What do you think of the new cover?

Yesterday was Thanksgiving and I had a particularly memorable one. Because my oldest son works in law enforcement, he only rarely is able to join us on the actual date of a holiday. But this year he was off work and got to come home. My youngest son (who's a creative writing major!), came home from college. Having a full house this year made me so very happy :) My oldest son even convinced me to try Angry Birds on my Roku. I agreed only if he would play it with me. We had tremendous fun -- so of course I'm now the newest addict of this delightful game.

This week my Christmas-themed romantic comedy ANGEL BE GOOD hit the #1 spot on the Amazon Movers and Shakers Kindle list AND hit the Kindle Top 100 Bestsellers list AND the Top 10 Romance list. There was a whole lot of deep breathing going in my house, and it was from pure amazement and excitement.

I have much to be tremendously grateful for this year, and that especially includes you, my dear friends and readers. Thank you so much for helping make this a Thanksgiving I will never forget!

Renegades, Rebels, Rabble Rousers and Rogues

Most writers listen to music when they write. I’m no exception. However, it took a while to find my groove. I have satellite radio in my office with dozens of stations. What to choose? Semi-highbrow Classical Pops seemed appropriate. Surely, it would inspire me to create pages and pages of beautiful prose. Not so. After fifteen minutes, my eyelids began to droop. Time out for a nap. Jazz made me twitchy. Under the influence of New Age, I fought the urge to rip off my clothes, drape my body with diaphanous sheer curtains and twirl around the living room.

Then I found Outlaw Country. Warning: if your idea of country music is Taylor Swift and Kenny Chesney, Outlaw Country is not for you. No, I’m talkin’ Waylon and Willie. Johnny and June. Hank 3 and Shooter Jennings. I’m talkin’ cringe-worthy grammar like ain’t got none and she don’t love me no more, along with some truly creative cuss words. I’m talkin’ real life, podnah. So, grab hold of that saddle horn and hang on tight.

It’s all there. All of life’s challenges. Religion. Relationships. Break-ups. Drinkin.’ Lots of drinkin’ songs like You Ain’t Much Fun Since I Quit Drinkin’. Why, you may ask, would an author of young adult urban fantasy pick such an inappropriate and occasionally degenerate genre of music for inspiration? Killer question, indeed. Even though I write from the viewpoint of a teenage girl, I am the product of many years of living. Hopefully, my life experiences will help create a richer, more three-dimensional character. Oh, who am I kidding? I like to laugh and Outlaw Country makes me laugh.

Searching for a spiritual facelift? Here are a couple of songs for you: Drop Kick Me, Jesus, Through the Goalposts of Life. I’ve Been Roped and Thrown By Jesus in the Holy Ghost Corral. Heaven’s Just a Sin Away.

Relationships are always tough, especially when the object of your affection is flawed—Her Teeth Were Stained, But Her Heart Was Pure—or a teenage romance, Billy Broke My Heart at Walgreens and I Cried All the Way to Sears. Can a man be too impressed with himself? I Wish I Were a Woman So I Could Go Out With a Guy Like Me. Who could forget the following heartfelt ditty, There Ain’t Enough Room in my Fruit of the Looms to Hold All My Lovin’ For You.

But, when love goes wrong, as it inevitably does on Outlaw Country, there’s a song for that. It’s Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night that Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long. You’re the Hangnail in my Life and I Can’t Bite You Off. If You Can’t Live Without Me, Why Ain’t You Dead Yet? Your Negligee Has Turned Into a Flannel Nightgown.

Family Values? You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly. Mama, Get the Hammer/There’s a Fly on Papa’s Head.

Feel a little naughty? These songs are for you: There’s a Party in my Pants and You’re Invited. How Can I Get Over You if You Won’t Get Out From Under Me? Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed.

Okay, I confess I’ve listed the most outrageous song titles I could find for this post. Most of the time, O.C. plays solidly good, old school, down-home country music that reflects America’s roots. And, they also feature wonderful new singers/song writers like Elizabeth Cook, Lucinda Williams, Jace Everett (he sings the True Blood theme, Bad Things), Elliot Randal and Kacey Jones whose song, 222^nd Wind is featured on my website. So, give it a whirl. You might be pleasantly surprised.

What inspires you? 80’s rock? Blue grass? Heavy metal? Inquiring minds want to know.

The following excerpt is from the short story The Taking of Michael McConnolly.

As a kid, Michael McConnolly once rode an elephant at the circus. That may seem trite in the midst of a tale such as this, but as Brent and Mark rattled the earth with ear-shattering snores beside me—I wouldn’t be surprised if they had placed a bet on who could disrupt my sleep the most—I found myself thinking of this. He first told me of his elephant adventure as he and Mark lay sprawled across my college apartment’s floor after a Pearl Jam concert many years ago. The story had struck us just as the night’s beer consumption reached that critical point when perfectly timed gas and the lamest of jokes can double you over. And his elephant story—I even got a certificate!—damn near killed us. With the remnants of our cigarettes’ smoky trails hovering above us, we laughed until the alcohol clubbed us into the sleep of the drunk.

I tried to hear that laugh again—Mike’s natural, easygoing chortle. But my mind couldn’t find the tears of mirth that coated his face that night. All I heard was that other laugh, the one he had taken to his tent. My brain turned off the sound—protecting me, I guess, from what was to come—and I finally drifted into a restless sleep convinced he had been sobbing instead.

Sometime later—seconds, minutes at the most—I awoke to Zeke’s voice. “Mike’s gone.”

I first thought he said “Light’s on,” like some drill sergeant who’d lost the stomach for any stereotypical Hollywood screaming.

“He’s gone, man. Get up.” Zeke walked out.

Hearing him that time, I rubbed sleep from my eyes and kicked my sleeping brothers. Their snores morphed into angry, lionish growls, but they sat up with a few more well-aimed shots of my foot.

“How you guys ever got laid, much less married, with noises like that, I’ll never know.” Blank looks met my quip, so I said, “Mike’s gone. Zeke sounds worried. We better see what’s up.”

Five minutes later, with coats and boots clumsily donned and bladders hurriedly emptied, the six of us—my brothers and I, Zeke, Brody and Dan—stood by Mike’s empty tent. Zeke handed me the note he’d found taped to the outside of his own tent when he’d come outside to take a leak a few minutes before waking up the rest of us.

Something saw us take the amulet and it’s pissed.

You don’t piss off things like this.

It was written almost illegibly, a vast contrast from Mike’s usual neat, almost girlish script. A few inches down, he had scribbled some more, repeating his lunatic message from the campfire.

We’re not the ones. It doesn’t belong to us.

“Amulet?” Dan asked after I read the note aloud. “He probably doesn’t even know what an amulet is.”

“So where’d he go?” Brent asked. More than anyone, he seemed annoyed at the interruption of his beauty sleep.

The cry of the ivory horn answered him. It howled through the trees from the east side of the woods like a grief-stricken mourner. Our heads whipped towards the sound, then to the branch from which we’d hung it earlier. The branch was empty.

“Why’d he take the horn?” Brody asked.

“To call us for help,” Mark said. “He knows something we don’t.”

“Listen to it.” I silenced my friends with my hands and traced the direction of the horn call. “It’s coming from the direction of the Geocache box. Maybe Mike’s putting the necklace back.”

We snatched flashlights, donned headlamps. Mark grabbed his GPS-equipped phone, and we took off through the forest. The beams spasmed ahead of us like strobe lights. I remember thinking that I was glad none of us had epilepsy, lest we start seizing from the light show. If I had known of the bloodshed to come, I would’ve saved my thoughts for something other than whimsical wandering.

We reached the clearing where we had first found the Geocache in what seemed like seconds, although the hike earlier that day dictated that we must have been running for at least ten minutes. Except for the small-as-a-jockey but strong-as-a-racehorse Dan, none of us were exactly Olympians anymore—weekend warriors and beer-league softballers at best—so several more moments passed before we caught our wind enough to look around. Our breath fired into the cold air in visible puffs of exhaustion.

Zeke spoke first. “Blood.”

Even in the darkness, I saw that he was right. It spattered the ground at our feet, dotting dead leaves, streaking fallen tree trunks. Our lights illuminated crimson until it glowed against the backdrop of the woods. Under the raised tree root where we had first uncovered the Geocache, the wooden box lay smashed into countless shards that looked like teeth floating in a puddle of bloody rainwater. The necklace was nowhere to be seen.

Mark put his hand on my shoulder and squeezed until I had to bite my lip to stifle a grunt of pain. “What the fuck, Mike?” he said, more to himself than to me. “What the fuck?”

I shone a light upon my little brother’s face, an act that would’ve earned me a blindside backhand under normal circumstances, but the pale shock I saw there assured me his thoughts were miles from my flashlight beam. I followed his gaze.

The carnage wasn’t confined to the area near the Geocache box. No, a war had erupted in the forest. Our lights shone off trees shattered mid-trunk, great furrows ripped into the earth, and blood painting it all like a living fungus.

“Something tore this place apart,” Brent said.

My eyes refused to stray from the unfathomable amounts of blood splashed across the land before me. “Goddamn, Mike, I hope you at least held your own,” I whispered.

A scream ripped my attention from the battle site. It came from above, from the left, the right. It suffused me, burrowed into my skin and brain and fear until I knew but two simple facts. The scream was Mike’s, and it rattled with pain.

Someone spoke. It could’ve been any of them. “Guns.”

We rushed back to camp. Glock .40 cals and Ruger 9mm’s and Springfield Armory XD subcompacts—I understood none of their high-tech babble, but the clack of a fully loaded magazine slamming home, well, that I understood. I picked up a hatchet from the stack of firewood and tried to look like I belonged in this army.

Mike’s wail pounded the air again, panicked, wrought with agony. He was a tough man, old Irish tough; I’d witnessed him come out on top in more than a few bar fights. But this shriek had stripped away all the bravado and reduced his voice to that of a child facing the monster under his bed for the first time.

“Where the fuck is he?” I asked.

Brent slid a cartridge into his Glock’s handle and said, “Do we stick together or split up?” His face was steel.

“I think we’re armed enough to split up,” Brody said. He pointed to me and my brothers. “You three take that way, we’ll go this way.” He dictated directions.

I turned to gauge my brothers’ opinions, but Mark was already sprinting back into the woods, his pistol swinging at his side. It looked natural, organic, an extension of his flesh and bone. Brent and I followed him, our headlamps keeping him in sight, leaving Brody, Zeke and Dan behind.

We plunged into the woods. The sounds of nature at midnight vanished beneath our gasping breath, the furious crunching of our boots over dead leaves and branches. It was like hurtling through a vacuum, a tunnel devoid of any sensation not linked to adrenaline and fear. Even the beams from our lights were flat, illuminating so little that our faces slammed into the ground more than once as conniving roots grabbed at our ankles. Only when my hand wiped blood from my eyes did I realize that branches had been whipping across my face.

I stopped in a clearing, bent over gasping, and cursed the pack of American Spirits I’d inhaled the previous night. “Hold up, guys,” I said. “Let’s figure out where we . . .”

I was alone.

Prologue

Summer 1988

Megan and Holly ran, weaving their way through the crowds of the carnival and hollering to hear over the thick cheer that permeated the festive evening. Two teenage boys looked them up and down as they passed. Megan yanked Holly by her arm and pulled her into a long shadow cast by the colorful lights that illuminated a rickety roller coaster. They huddled together, giggling. A moment later, the roller coaster whooshed by, sending them scampering through the mass of carnival-goers, engulfed in uncontrollable shrieks of laughter.

A small red tent with a psychedelic sign that read “Psychic Readings! See Your Future! $3!” caught Megan’s attention. She dragged Holly to the entrance, and they peered into the smoky gloom as they parted the curtain of stringed glass beads, which clinked and jingled as they were pushed to the side.

Holly pulled at Megan’s sleeve, “Let’s get out of here.”

Megan distractedly shrugged off Holly’s hand. She was mesmerized by the rush of the unknown, spellbound by the eccentric woman sitting within the darkened tent. A chill ran up Megan’s spine. The woman looked into her eyes and beckoned her forward. Megan reached behind her and grasped Holly’s hand, pulling her into the tent against her will. She reached into her pocket and, barely able to take her eyes from the old woman’s, fumbled to count her money and then shoved six crumpled dollar bills into a glass jar that sat on a pedestal by the entrance.

The cacophony of the rides and the crowds seemed to fall away as a hushed stillness closed in around them, save for the crackle of the flickering flames dancing on their wicks. The girls’ hands trembled. They were equally scared and excited by the mystical old woman shrouded in veils. Several bracelets clanked and dangled from her thick wrist as she motioned for them to sit around the small round table. They startled when the old woman grabbed their hands with her rough, plump fingers, then she slowly and dramatically closed her eyes.

Her hands tightened around theirs. The woman gasped a deep breath, and her body raised up and back, as if she were being pushed against the back of her chair. She held her breath, then let it out in a rush of air. Her hands fell open, releasing theirs. Her shoulders slumped forward, and her head followed.

Holly snapped her head in Megan’s direction and mouthed, “What the hell?”

The woman opened her heavily-painted eyes, which grew wide and laden with concern, and stared into Megan’s eyes. Megan felt riveted to her chair. The woman reached across the table and touched her hand, sending a jolt of energy up Megan’s arm. Megan pulled her hand away, frightened. The woman whispered to her, “Ah, High Priestess, my teen querent. She will need you, and you will know.”

Megan’s legs trembled, her heart pounded in her chest. Her breaths came in short, clipped bursts. She and Holly turned wide, scared eyes toward each other. The woman moved her vision to the space between Megan and Holly. “Three of Swords pierce a heart. Against the background of a storm, it bleeds.” She closed her eyes again, and whispered, “I see death.” Her eyes slowly opened and she squinted, as if she were watching a scene unfold of a different time and place, her eyes darting without focus. Then seeming to recite, she intoned, “Blood or poison will come: Transformation—passage—truth.”

The girls reached for each other’s shaking hands. Holly’s eyes welled with tears, her head visibly shook. Megan remained focused on each word the old woman said, unable to turn away.

The psychic turned those same concerned eyes to Holly. They glazed over with a look the girls could not read. Fear? Hatred? Understanding? She pointed a long, painted fingernail at Holly and hissed, “Judgment asks for the resurrection to summon the past, forgive it, and let it go.” She lowered her hand and said, “One will be released,” then quietly, under her breath, “and returned after death.”

After a moment of panicked silence, the girls stood, sending their chairs flying askew. Then they fled, running fast and hard into the chaos of the carnival, caught in a frenzy of fear and hysterical laughter.

The psychic screamed into the night behind them. Her words trailed in their wake and echoed in Megan’s ears for days, “With this spell, I empower thee. I empower thee!”

Chapter One

2009

Megan steadied herself against the cold porcelain sink, hoping the morning’s nausea would subside and trying to strengthen herself for the tough decision that had been wreaking havoc with her mind lately, and the choice that lay ahead. The familiar Tink, pause, Tink, pause on her bedroom window drew her attention. A confused cardinal had repeatedly gone beak to glass in recent weeks, as though trying to rouse her. As she tried to calculate the number of times she’d also awakened to nausea, the familiar surge of bile rose in her throat.

She clung to the toilet as if it were a security blanket. The smell of last night’s dinner still wafted in the air, sending her body into convulsions of dry heaves. Great, Megan thought as she grasped her stomach. She looked up at the ceiling, What the hell am I going to do now?

“Mom?” Olivia’s voice carried down the hall. “Mo-om!” The single word stretched into two perfect teenage syllables.

Megan heard the drama in her voice and closed her eyes against her growing frustration. She knew that particular scream, the self-centered, in-a-hurry, where’s-my-stuff scream. She did not have the patience to deal with Olivia’s drama on this particular morning. She grabbed hold of the sink and pulled herself up. Her stomach lurched again, causing her whole body to clench. She prayed for some relief as Olivia’s voice came screaming at her again.

“What!” she snapped back. She wished she could have been more patient with Olivia, but at that moment, she was overtaken by exhaustion, confusion, and anger. She wanted to kick something, to cry, to scream until she no longer had a voice—but her body was too tired to do any of those things. She had to pull herself together and get through the day.

Megan rinsed out her mouth and averted her eyes from the sheet-white face that reflected back at her.

“Never mind!” Olivia yelled from the hall. Her voice carried lightly, the tension from a moment ago gone.

Thank God, Megan said to herself. She made her way back to her bed and lay down, pulling the blanket over her head to shut out the light—and maybe life—for a moment.

Vinnie Dawson stepped into the hallway with his thuggy mate from the boxing match. Vinnie wore a very expensive looking charcoal suit and a beige cashmere coat. His chubby fingers, resembling chipolata sausages, were encased in lots of thick gold rings. He shrugged out of the coat and Thuggy took it, draping it over his arm. Apart from the fact that Vinnie was older than Thuggy by about twenty years, they looked pretty much the same. Same big belly, same bald head, same evil eyes. The only differences were that Thuggy wore a pair of jeans that were so tight he looked like he’d been vacuum-packed into them, and he had a gap in his front teeth big enough to fit a bus through. OK, I take back all I said about owners not really looking like their pets.

‘Well, well, well, Amber Fox.’ Vinnie’s pale eyes drilled into me. ‘I never thought I’d be crossing paths with you again.’

‘I’ve missed you, too, Vinnie. Or should I say VD.’ I gave him my best I’m-not-afraid-of-the-big-bad-wolf smile. ‘How’s Lee?’ I tilted my head. ‘Got used to life on the outside now, has he?’

Vinnie did something that could’ve passed for a growl. ‘You’re not worthy to even mention Lee’s name.’

‘That’s funny because I already did.’ I faked a smile so wide that my mouth started aching. OK, probably not a sensible idea to antagonize Vinnie “Hard-Nut” Dawson, but the sensible part of me had just vanished in a puff of smoke. Bad guys tended to bring out the sarcasm in me for some bizarre reason. Maybe I had a secret death wish, I don’t know. Sarcasm was good for putting up a front. If you were frightened or nervous or you just didn’t want to make yourself vulnerable by giving away your feelings, sarcasm was just the ticket.

Vinnie’s eyes narrowed to slits. ‘What are you doing here?’ He pulled out a toffee from his pocket, slowly unwrapped it as he kept his gaze firmly locked on me, and popped it in his mouth. Thuggy took the wrapper off him and held it in his meaty fist. ‘Why is there a cop in your house, Letitia?’ Vinnie chewed as he waited for an answer.

Letitia frowned. ‘A cop? I thought you were here about Levi’s medical insurance.’

‘I am. I used to be a cop,’ I told her.

Vinnie let out a long slow whistle. ‘Not a cop anymore, eh? So you haven’t got any of your little cop mates to back you up now, then? I must remember that.’ He stopped chewing and belted out a throaty cackle.

As if on cue, Thuggy did the same. I wondered if that was part of his job description: Evil throaty cackling must be required at a moment’s notice. Failure to do so will mean termination of employment and/or sudden, agonizing death.

My eyebrows headed north at the cackling. A pack of hyenas had nothing on these two. ‘Has Lee been up to his old tricks again robbing banks?’ OK, it could be a simple coincidence that Carl Thomas’s bank had recently been robbed before he showed up at Levi’s fight in the vicinity of Lee’s cousin, Vinnie. But I didn’t believe in coincidences.

Vinnie abruptly stopped cackling. So did Thuggy.

Addendum to job description: All evil, throaty cackling must cease and desist at a moment’s notice.

‘Any more mention of Lee and you’ll be sorry. I have the memory of an elephant.’ Vinnie tapped his forehead.

I eyed his huge stomach, which was only slightly smaller than the Acropolis. ‘Just the memory of an elephant?’

Vinnie sucked in his stomach and glared at me. ‘Don’t think I’ve forgotten it was you who put him away.’

I pulled a mock horror face. ‘Ooh, I’m scared.’ Actually, my knees were shaking a little bit, but I wasn’t going to let on. Amber Fox rule number one: don’t let elephant-gut criminals intimidate you.

Vinnie gave me a superior smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. ‘You will be. I think you should go now before my friend here takes a shine to you.’ He nodded towards Thuggy.

Thuggy smiled as well. It wasn’t a nice smile, either. It was the kind of smile that let you know he killed people for a living and enjoyed doing it, too.

I made a mental note never to use that kind of smile. It wasn’t very flattering.

I sauntered past Thuggy and Vinnie with a grin on my face. Luckily, they didn’t seem to notice my sauntering skills had gone downhill a bit because of my shaky legs.

This wasn’t exactly what I had in mind when I said I wanted an exciting distraction.

Be careful what you wish for.

Wonderful visit to Louisville, KY!

Last month I had a great time speaking at the Louisville Romance Writers. They are a great group of writers and I enjoyed meeting them!

Speaking to LRW provided me with a wonderful opportunity to visit with my dear, darling, fun and fabulous friend, Anne Peabody Chism. She's pictured above in front of her awesome Clara Belle's Upscale Resale Shop in Louisville. Since I'm planning a book set around a resale/antique store, this was a perfect opportunity for me to do a little research (okay, to snoop!).

Justice Is Served Excerpt:

He smiled at that, the dimples showing but not masking the dangerous vibe that still rolled off him like cheap cologne. "I was told you have good instincts...almost scary ones from what I hear."

She raised an eyebrow, "Look, Detective Durango, I could care less what anyone told you about me. I'm a simple substitute teacher."

He calmly put the wallet back into his pocket and said, "From what I hear, there's not much simple about you."

She sighed, not really feeling like crossing mental swords with him. She turned and walked back in the opposite direction. He didn't expect that and so she was almost to the door when he grabbed her arm. She stopped walking, ignoring the electrical thrill that coursed up her arm, and said very calmly, “Let go of my arm or end up on the pavement, your choice.”

He didn’t let go but said, “He said you were stubborn, but not this stubborn.” She eyed his hand that still firmly grasped her right upper arm and sighed. He wanted her to ask who the “he” was, but she was too tired to continue to play his silly game. It had been a long and emotionally exhausting day with her second graders.

Instead, she said again, “You have five seconds to let go or you’ll look really silly having a woman beat you to a pulp. Might even be the highlight of the crowd's night you never know. Marley doesn’t get many parking lot brawls.”

Justice Never Sleeps Excerpt:

He took out his wallet and flipped it open to the photo Charlie had given him the last day they saw each other. It was a picture of Justus at some kind of party. She was dressed in a short green dress, her long dark blonde hair in waves down her back. She was talking to someone and at the time the picture was taken, the person must have said something funny, because Justus was laughing.

He remembered vividly what Charlie had said when he gave him the photo. They were standing in the middle of the park near the Institute’s grey marble walls. Charlie had smiled as he looked at the picture before handing it to him. He had just raised an eyebrow at it and Charlie had laughed. “Look, Luc, I know what you’ve gone through with your past girlfriends, but you know that not all things in this world are meant to be.”

Durango had rolled his eyes, the pain still too fresh in his heart at the mention of his past bad luck. It was weird but it seemed like something always went wrong with the girls that he dated. They would date him for a month or two and then they acted like they never wanted to see him again. The last one, Cindy, had even threatened to get a restraining order against him if he didn’t leave her alone. She wouldn’t even explain why, she just should him the bruises that she swore he caused and that was all. He had studied the picture, noting how cute the girl in it was. He looked up at his foster brother and said, “Yeah, well things happen. No big thing.”

Charlie had smiled again, and then a shadow came across his face as he said, “Luc, I know you don’t believe in all that preordained stuff. Hell, I don’t know if I believe it either, but Justus is very special. I need you to promise me that you will watch out for her if something happens to me.”

He had just looked at Charlie. Charlie had come to live with Sylvia and Tony when Durango was six and Charlie was sixteen. They had quickly become close and he always felt like Charlie was more then just a foster brother. Durango recognized that look on Charlie’s face; he had seen it all too many times growing up. He looked down at the picture again and said, “Well, sure Charlie, but nothing will happen to you.” He punched the older man in the arm and said, “You’re too stubborn for anything to happen to you.”

Charlie had just looked at him, his blue-grey eyes filled with a sadness that Durango had never seen in them before. He looked away and said, “I just will feel better knowing someone is looking out for the kid. She’s incredibly smart, but also a bit reckless at times.” He looked back at Durango and smiled a little, “Besides, I’m not going to live forever.” Charlie clapped him on the shoulder and then turned and went back into the building. It was the last time that they had talked before he had gotten the call that his foster brother had been killed in the pursuit of the Dollmaker.

He pushed the memory aside, focusing on the flower instead. There was still something naggingly familiar about it but he just couldn’t put a finger on what it was. At times like this he really missed Charlie. Charlie had always laughed about the fact that he had been such an impulsive kid, always charging head first into a situation, surprised by the outcome of not having thought his actions through first. He had not just been a foster brother, but the closest thing that Durango had ever had to a real blood brother. That was part of the problem. He knew how Justus had gotten so attached to him, but they both had to learn to move on, rather they wanted to or not.

I'm happy to welcome guest poster, Geraldine Solon to my blog today. Not only is she talking about creating great characters, but she's also provided an excerpt of her novel, Love Letters.

Developing Your Characters by Geraldine Solon

Developing your characters can be tricky and an effective way to do it is to create a character sketch. A character sketch allows you to differentiate your characters from one other. You can achieve this if you study and observe how people behave. Do they move their hands when they communicate? What are their expressions and mannerisms? Having a clear visual image of your characters which includes height, weight, eye color, skin and hair makes them real. Do they dress in a certain way? Emphasize on their skills, habits, fear and feelings whether it is good or bad. Do they speak with an accent? What is their background?

You can be as detailed in defining your characters. Pick out specific characteristics combined with voice for each of your characters. Dialogue is an important factor which can define your characters. Combining dialogue with action shows what type of a person your characters are. Does she bite her nails when she is nervous? Is she high strung or calm?

Your hero will need to have a side kick or mentor that is closely aligned with the hero’s goal. Her character brings the hero to see things in proper perspective. She is there to advice the hero when trouble comes knocking.

Your hero needs to have a visible goal that is evident in the first chapter. Ask yourself what motivates your hero to achieve her goal. Is there a reward waiting for her if she accomplishes her goal? What will happen to your hero in the event she doesn’t achieve her goal? Conflict is what drives the story. Conflict is the blood that flows between the veins of your novel. How will you keep your reader’s in suspense? You aim to have your readers wondering what will take place next. This keeps them from putting the book down and wanting more.

Creating a powerful Antagonist is the main conflict your hero needs to face when trying to attain her goal. The Antagonist will do everything to prevent the hero from succeeding. The Antagonist character doesn’t need to be a person and can also be in a form of a natural tragedy like an earthquake, but it has to be clear that it is the opposing factor. The Antagonist can also be an inner struggle between the hero and herself which stands between her and the goal.

Your hero needs to be realistic and someone readers can relate to. Although you’ve created a fictional character, the only way for readers to understand and route for her is if you make her flawed and not perfect. Showing your hero’s pain and vulnerability will allow your readers to sympathize with her. Ask yourself what does your hero need? Having an internal conflict for your hero creates a powerful novel. What is her biggest fear?

Don’t be afraid to push your hero to the limits for this creates conflict and without conflict you have no story. An effective way to raise the stakes for your hero is to let bad things happen to her. Although we love our hero a lot and it would hurt us to see her suffer, you’re only giving justice to the story when you’ve included conflict.

Every page of your novel should advance the plot creating bigger challenges. The conflict should increase as the plot moves forward but don’t make the obstacles too impossible for your hero to accomplish. All your major characters should be introduced in the first few chapters to allow your readers to get acquainted with them. Your hero should grow and change through the pages of your book.

>As an author, it is important to truly fall in love with your characters. If you’re emotionally connected and in tuned with them so will your readers. Remember, you gave them breath and life and although they may take a life of their own, holding them close to your heart keeps them powerful and alive.

Chapter One

As Chloe Rogers put her car in reverse, she couldn’t stop looking at her princess-cut diamond. The sun through her window made the diamond sparkle. She turned on the radio, singing as she drummed her fingers to the beat.

“I’m engaged!” she squealed out loud, “To the most handsome man in the universe.” She closed her eyes remembering how Richard had knelt down and asked her to marry him earlier that morning at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Half Moon Bay. No sooner had she opened her eyes than she felt a soft bump and heard the sound of scraping metal.

“Oh no,” she groaned as she looked through her rearview mirror at a blue Ford Mustang. She pulled over towards the parking lot and saw a tall man with long hair wearing a t-shirt and surfing shorts got out and came across the parking lot toward her. Her heart beat quickly as he approached her. Why does he look so familiar?

“I’m sorry, I didn’t see you. I promise my insurance will take care of it,” Chloe said as she got out of her car and followed him to his Mustang.

The man studied his car, his gold-blond hair blowing in the wind. “Hey, no sweat. I don’t have a single scratch on my car.”

Chloe caught her breath, relieved that no serious damage had been done.

“Let’s check yours.” They walked back to her car. “Just a scratch,” the man said, smiling.

Where have I seen that smile before?

She huffed a sigh. “Nothing to worry about then. I’m really sorry.”

“It’s nothing. I’m Josh by the way,” he said, extending his hand.

“Chloe.” She shook his hand.

“Chloe? Chloe Rogers? Is it you?”

Chloe frowned, trying to place him.

“I thought it was you, but I wasn’t sure. Remember me…Josh Goldman? It’s been ages.”

Chloe’s heart skipped a beat. Of course she remembered him. How could she forget her first love from sixth grade?

She was eleven years old when she developed a crush on Josh. She had scribbled the name Joshua Goldman over and over on her PeeChee folder. When he moved to Oregon she had cried buckets of tears. They had gone down to the beach and made a promise to love each other. Forever. He was the first boy to ever kiss her.

“Josh Goldman?” she asked, pretending not to remember.

“Yes, my brother and I moved back a week ago from Oregon,” he said, smiling.

A week ago and I never saw him? She remembered his smile, and how all the girls in school were crazy about him. “What brings you back to Half Moon Bay?” she asked, trying to stay calm.

“When we were in Oregon, our parents took Phil and me to Hawaii every summer,” Josh said, his eyes never leaving hers. “That’s where we learned how to surf. Last year, Phil and I decided to open our own surf shop in Half Moon Bay. Phil has qualified to compete in the Maverick this year.”

“You mean Phil Goldman is the professional surfer?” Chloe asked in surprise. “I never put two and two together. Wow, you must be so proud.”

“Yeah, and that’s why business should be great. Name recognition.” Josh tugged a strand of hair behind his ear.

“Don’t tell me your surf shop is the one that just opened up at the end of Main Street? Surfing Buddies?”

“That’s right. That’s our shop,” he said. “Phil and I put all our savings in this business, so it’s a win or lose kind of thing.”

“Unbelievable. I work at the other end of Main Street. I manage Brides Only.”

“That wedding store? I never thought to check it out. I mean it’s for –”

“Brides only,” Chloe grinned.

“Yeah, yeah, I mean, I totally wouldn’t be caught dead in that store.” He laughed.

He seemed like the same Josh – happy-go-lucky, exciting, adventurous, and never fearful. She remembered how he would knock on her window to give her chocolates at midnight, and would scramble down the ladder when he heard Chloe’s mother screaming at her door. He had taken Chloe for a ride on his bicycle around Half Moon Bay. He played baseball back then, but seemed more interested in car racing. Chloe wasn’t surprised that Josh and Phil got into surfing.

She was still deep in thought reminiscing about the good old days when he said, “Listen, we should get together sometime. I mean, now that I know where you are, I can pop in.”

“Of course,” she said, then immediately froze. Why did I say that? I’m getting married in four months. I shouldn’t be meeting Josh. But then she told herself to relax. He was just an old friend and there was nothing wrong with hanging out with an old friend. “Sorry about your car.”

“Hey, no sweat,” he said. “Besides, I’m glad it happened. Otherwise, we’d never have met again.”

Chloe’s heart skipped as she said goodbye and drove to work thinking about Josh.

She opened the door to Bride’s Only and rushed to the stockroom to try on several gowns. Richard had requested she begin making arrangements for the wedding. Chloe shrugged into a cream colored Vera Wang wedding gown with a fully beaded A-line cut. As she examined herself in the fitting room mirror she replayed the morning’s events. I can’t believe Josh is back in town…

After a few minutes she heard a loud voice and pulled back the curtain to see Nicole standing there. Her best friend was dressed in a black lace top that revealed her toned biceps and skin tight jeans with glimmering four inches high heels. Should she tell her about Josh first, or about Richard’s proposal?

“You’re never going to believe it, Nicole,” Chloe squealed. “After two years, I’m finally engaged!”

“To Richard?” Nicole made a face as she put her purse on the table closest to the fitting room.

Chloe inspected herself in the mirror. For five years, Chloe had managed the shop, and for those same five years she had dreamed of becoming the bride instead of just selling to brides. She turned for a side view of her dress and frowned. Now that her dream was finally coming true, why did Nicole have to spoil it for her? And why did Josh have to show up to confuse the issue?

“Would you quit giving me that look and let me know if a customer comes in?” Chloe said, peering through the half-open velvet fitting room drapes. “Maureen called in sick and Faye has a dental appointment, so this is the only time I can try on gowns. The shop is going to get busy later.”

Like many twenty-four year olds, Chloe Rogers had dreamed of her wedding day for as long as she could remember. As an only child, she would play make-believe using her mother’s clothes as she walked down the hallway of their ranch-style home. She tugged the clasps of the gown. Nicole should be happy for her. She knew if she told Nicole about Josh now it would only make matters worse. In sixth grade, Nicole had been so certain that they were right for each other. She wondered if Nicole would even remember him now.

“How long are you going to take?” Nicole asked, shoving back a lock of silky brown hair that framed her wide-set brown eyes. “I have to go to work.”

“Finding the perfect gown takes time.”

Nicole grinned. “With your legs and that figure? Focus on your assets, Chloe.”

“I want to look perfect for Richard,” Chloe announced, struggling with the zipper.

Nicole clenched her fists. “I don’t know whether I should be happy for you or worried.”

Nicole had been Chloe’s best friend since second grade and would be her maid of honor; so of all people, she should be happy for her.

Chloe put her head through the curtain and frowned at her friend. “Why would you say such a thing?”

“You know how I feel about Richard,” Nicole said, rolling her eyes as Chloe shrugged out of the latest gown and handed it to Nicole, then put on yet another one. “How many more gowns do you need to try?”

“Will you stop complaining, Nic? Most of them make me look fat.”

“How can you say that when all the gowns look perfect on you?” Nicole asked and sighed impatiently. Nicole Simmons was the exact opposite of Chloe, but somehow they had managed to be friends despite their differences. Whereas Chloe had fair skin, long dark curly hair with a widow’s peak, and stood only 5’6” tall, Nicole was six feet tall and a beautiful African American.

“You’re only saying that because you don’t like Richard and don’t want me to get married,” Chloe said, exiting the fitting room. “Now tell me – what do you think?”

Nicole put her hands to her mouth. “Chloe…”

The Dior gown had long spaghetti straps with a simple lace design in front. The empire waist gave the dress an elegant touch, soft and flattering.

“This one is perfect,” Chloe breathed.

“You’re the most beautiful bride I’ve ever seen,” Nicole said.

Chloe hugged her friend. “Thanks for being so patient with me. I told Richard that our wedding wouldn’t be complete unless we have it at the Ritz-Carlton hotel that overlooks the ocean. I can already see myself walking down the aisle, smell the fresh air, and hear the sound of the waves. Totally breathtaking.”

Each workday, Chloe met future brides trying on wedding gowns while chattering with their girlfriends. She had never met a bride who wasn’t excited about her wedding day. Chloe looked down at her dress and spun a circle, thrilled that she, too, would fulfill her dream of becoming a bride.

As she came to a stop she looked around at Millie Adams’ shop. Brides Only was known for its simple yet elegant gowns at a reasonable price. Fortunately, Millie trusted Chloe to run her shop, since she had other businesses to attend to.

Brides Only was a cozy and intimate shop that made customers feel at home. It originally sold only ready-to-wear bridal gowns, but with Chloe’s ideas, they had added purses, tiaras, little trinkets, scented candles, and other accessories.

Chloe pampered future brides as they entered the shop, most brought in through referrals. Though Chloe had two associates to assist her with the shop, it was she who the customers looked for each time they entered the shop. Something about her enthusiasm seemed to rub off on the nervous brides, reminding them why they were here.

She walked over to a rack of gowns and fingered them. The gowns were hung on high-quality, white satin hangers with bows in the middle. The purses were a variety of small satin and beaded purses in either white or off-white from top designers: Jessica McClintock, Carolina Herrera, and Vera Wang.

“Why do you want to have your wedding in Half Moon Bay at the Ritz when you’ve lived here your whole life?” Nicole asked. “If I get married, I’m flying to Vegas. I don’t want to waste time planning a wedding.”

“C’mon, Nic, you know how much the Ritz means to me. That’s where I met Richard, and it’s where he proposed to me this morning. You need to be more romantic.” She would never forget the day she met Richard. She closed her eyes, remembering. He was dashing in his gray Armani suit. While she watched the sunset from a corner table in the restaurant, he kept eyeing her from where he sat with a client. He finally approached her after his business meeting. She smiled at the memory then opened her eyes.

“Yeah, yeah.” Nicole pursed her lips.

Chloe suddenly grew teary-eyed. “Dad won’t be here to walk me down the aisle,” She sniffed. “And with Mom not talking to me, all I have is dear Greta.”

Day Trip to Charleston, SC

In addition to writing on the beach, Ali, Hannah and I also went on a research trip to Charleston, SC. Love, love the city. One of our first stops was lunch at the awesome 82 Queen Restaurant. This photo is from just inside the courtyard. Love the owl on the roof :)

The food was fabulous, but so was the view and I'm not talking about the courtyard. Seated nearby was actor/comedian Bill Murray. Since we'd only seen him on screen before, both Hannah and I were surprised by how tall he is. And he's even more handsome in person!

After lunch we took a bus tour of the city, then toured one of the beautiful historic homes.

That evening we ate dinner at a great restaurant in the Market area before returning to Myrtle Beach. It was a fun day with lots of great fodder for future books for each of us!

2011 Sisters Trip -- Part Three -- Savannah, GA

Terri and I are pictured above in front of the fountain at Forsyth Park.

The first thing Terri and I did on Monday morning was to make for one of Savannah's Squares in the historic district. Our hotel was located within walking distance of Johnson Square.

After grabbing breakfast at a wonderful cafe in the historic district, we headed to the Savannah History Museum where we purchased tickets for the trolley tour.

Again we were able to get on and off at will, which allowed us to cover a lot more territory than we would have been able to by foot or by car. Can't recommend these tours enough! The only thing we wanted to do but simply couldn't find time for was to eat at Paula Dean's The Lady and Sons restaurant. Will be sure to plan for it on our next trip!

I didn't know much about Savannah's squares until I arrived and saw how beautiful they are and how they make the historic district stand out from other cities'. Since Terri has a masters degree in landscape design, this was the highlight of the trip for her and she took literally hundreds of photographs. I'm sharing only a very few. I am kindly not including the many, many photos she took of our hotel suite ;)

The city is enchanting. For a long time I've had a story idea and have been looking for the perfect location for the story. Savannah is IT. Don't know when I'll have time to work on this new story, but since visiting Savannah, bits and pieces of the story, the theme, the characters have all fallen into place. Just thinking about it makes me hungry to write :)

I can't talk about Savannah and books without mentioning Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. Pictured below is a photo of the Mercer Williams House featured in the book.

After morning and lunch in Savannah, we headed to Orlando (about 6 hours away) for dinner with my son, then made it to my home on the west coast of Florida at around 1:00 AM.

2011 Sisters Trip -- Part Two -- St. Augustine

On Sunday we spent the day in St. Augustine, FL touring everything we could in one swoop. We started the day with coffee on the beach (pictured above).

I completely fell in love with St. Augustine and hope to return soon with my hubby. What's not to love about a beautiful historic city with wonderful shops, great restaurants, museums and old homes galore, surrounded by water? Lovely.

We bought trolley tour passes, which made it possible for us to visit so many places in one day. It was great to be able to hop on or off whenever we wanted to. And yes, WE DRANK FROM THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH -- watch out world!

This year Terri and I did two cities in three madly fun days. I picked her up at the airport in Tampa and we drove directly to St. Augustine, FL where we spent the night at a hotel on Vilano Beach. Pictured above is the view from our hotel room.

That night we headed to the Old City where we had dinner, followed by the Ghosts and Gravestones ghost tour! Woooooo :)

Here's a little excerpt from my new "sweet" romantic comedy, Kissing Kelli. Hope you enjoy!

It had been three days and Kelli couldn’t seem to get the irksome cowboy out of her mind. Of course, his many phone calls might have had something to do with that.

She'd tried to remain busy by concentrating on her animal patients and by cleaning out her closet at home, but no matter what, she couldn't get the cowboy out of her mind. When she’d checked with her receptionist mid-morning, she learned Bobby Gray hadn’t called today. She’d said, “Good riddance,” but now she wondered.

Why hadn’t he called?

Bobby Gray was giving up awfully easily. If Kelli had been intent on wooing a man—say, him—she wouldn’t have given up after a few phone calls. She’d have considered it a challenge.

But then, that was the thing about her. She wasn’t at all ladylike. She was determined. She was stubborn. And she enjoyed hard work more than she liked shopping.

Carefully carrying the small rabbit back into the examination room, she nodded at the little girl who owned the bunny. “Peter’s fine. Only had a little indigestion and dehydration.”

The child answered with a huge, gap-toothed smile as she clasped her bunny into her arms. “Thankth Docthor.”

Kelli turned to the girl’s mom. “You do know that Peter is short for Petunia, right?”

“Oh, no,” answered the mother with a distressed expression on her face.

“Oh, yes. You’ll want to bring her back for a pre-natal checkup in three weeks.”

“She's pregnant?” asked the mother.

Using lay-person jargon, Kelli explained that the bunny would have her litter of babies within a couple of weeks.

“Baby bunnies,” cried the little girl happily, clapping her hands together.

Even the girl’s mother wasn’t all that unhappy. She smiled at the bunny and gave it a quick pet.

Kelli led them out to the waiting area and headed toward the next examination room, where someone was waiting with a—she checked the chart—sick kitten.

She clicked open the door, and stopped in her tracks. The cowboy in question stood there with one of the scrawniest and most active gray tabbies she’d ever seen.

Bobby Gray’s face looked like someone had Sharpied eight thin, red stripes down it, but on closer observation, she suspected the kitten had meted out some feline discipline. Bobby Gray badly needed it, if you asked her.

“Mr. Nelson.”

“So formal.”

“Look, cowboy. I didn’t return your calls for a reason. I’m not interested.”

“You’ve wounded me again, Doc.”

“You don’t look the least bit wounded.”

He held his free palm to his chest. “Can’t you see I’ve got a dying kitten on my hands?”

The kitten’s eyes were clear and alert. She glanced down at the chart, but didn’t see anything there to indicate the animal was in jeopardy—other than being in the cowboy’s possession, that is. He had probably brought the kitten in simply to get some time with her.

Some tiny part of her, perhaps her latent girlie-girl, was gratified that Bobby Gray hadn’t given up. She liked persistence as a general trait, but it was a bad idea in his case because Lori wouldn’t like what might develop between the two of them.

Kelli needed to send the man on his way, but couldn’t resist first pointing out that she was onto his game. “The kitten may be a little skinny, but she looks healthy. I bet she’s not even yours. Where’d you get her, the Humane Society?”

“I’m very attached to my kitten. Come here, Dolly.” He pointed to his chin and the kitten licked it.

“So maybe Dolly knows you, but I’m not the only vet in the DFW area.”

“The only vet I know,” he lowered his voice, “and trust.”

She wouldn’t laugh. He was sooo bad. He was like dealing with a cute snake-oil salesman, if there was such a thing. Yet, at times she saw the man he could be lurking beneath the Stetson, and that was dangerous to her peace of mind. “What are your kitten’s symptoms?”

“She’s turned into an attack kitten. Watch a minute—you’ll see.”

He twitched his fingers in front of the tabby, and the kitten raised her back and hissed. Bobby Gray grinned at Kelli expectantly while the kitten danced on the examination table. Too cute.

And Now They Are Seven!

Some of you may know that my son Ian and I made a mad dash to Dallas and back last week. My sister and her husband adopted four children and the court date came up too late for us to fly. So I picked Ian up at college and off we drove, making it in only 2 days. The following day was the big adoption, with a party our family threw for them on their return. We left to come back to Florida on Friday morning and made it safely home last Saturday night (late!). Getting ready for Christmas after that trip has been a bit of a challenge, but we managed to pull off most of the things that had to get done.

However, I could not have missed the adoption party for my new niece and nephews!!! They are the best bunch of kids and I couldn't be happier for the entire family! It certainly brought home the true meaning of Christmas to my family and me: Love.

I hope each of you have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Neewollah Festival 2010 -- Independence, KS

I've been meaning to post about my recent research trip to Independence, KS during the Neewollah Festival. Alfie Thompson graciously allowed me to stay with her family and took me to the Grand Parade. We had a wonderful time!

I wanted to share some of the photos I took.

I thought these horses and stage coach were a true highlight of the parade.

Pictured below are Judy & Lance Stanislaus, owners of Uncle Jack's Bar & Grill in Independence. They were kind enough to feed us a wonderful and delicious breakfast the morning of the Grand Parade.

Uncle Jack's is a special place. Even the Ladies' Room offers something unique by way of door handles :)

Another highlight of my day was stopping by Bette & Phil's Hallmark store. It was fun meeting everyone there!

I had such a great time in Kansas -- I can't wait for my next visit!

Confessions Collection, Volume 1

Today is the official release date of my Confessions Collection, Volume 1!

Some of you may know I used to write confessions for the confessions market. I decided it would be fun to combine a few of my confessions into one volume of short stories. This anthology includes three fun stories: My Husband Calls Me Mama Scrooge!, My Doctor Demanded Sex, and A Math Curse Almost Ruined My Life!

Last night's book signing

Last night was the launch of C.L. Wilson's CROWN OF CRYSTAL FLAME, the 5th and final book in her epic fantasy Tairen Soul series and a multi-author book signing at the Carrollwood Tampa Barnes and Noble.

I signed copies of DIARY OF A CONFESSIONS QUEEN. Also participating were Julie Leto, Kimberly Llewellyn, Linnea Sinclair, and Jamie Rush/Tina Wainscott.

St Pete Times Festival of Reading 2010

I had a fabulous time participating in this year's Festival of Reading! The weather was perfect, the setting was idyllic and I think everyone had a great time talking books, books, books :)

I thought I'd share a few photos from the Festival, taken by fellow author, Kimberly Llewellyn, who graciously shared them.

Below is a photo of the fabulous and wonderful Piper Castillo who escorted me around the Festival and introduced me during my seminar. Piper is a St Pete Times Staff Writer.

The next two photos are from the Author Reception held at the beautiful St Pete Times' historic Tramor.

The wonderful Lori Gaudreau of the St Pete Times is pictured below (in red) in front of the historic Williams House, a beautiful feature of the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus. It was simply a pleasure meeting Lori. She coordinated all of the authors exceptionally well.

I hope to follow up tomorrow with more photos of this fun event. I truly appreciate being invited to participate by the Times and, as you can see, had a fantastic time!

Maggie's Finalist

Oh, I received some delightful news yesterday. HOT FLASH is a finalist in the Georgia Romance Writers 2010 Maggie Awards!

Comedy is such an odd bird. It seems that either you totally get it, or you don't get it at all. In this case obviously the judges got it which makes me very happy :)

This contest is very special to me. The first conference I ever attended was GRW's Moonlight and Magnolia's conference. I vividly recall sitting at the awards luncheon and hearing the names of the Maggie finalists called and then the winners were announced. I always wanted to enter the Maggie's and was finally able to do so with HOT FLASH. I have a feeling of going full circle and it's lovely -- KC

Research trip to Albany, Texas

I recently returned from an awesome research trip to Albany, Texas. Terri (my sister) and I had a wonderful time further exploring the area. Our great-great grandfather (Judge John Cornelius Lynch) settled here before it became the county seat and was ultimately named Albany :) Pictured above is the current day ranch that used to be the Lynch Ranch. Our father actually lived here when he was young.

Over the course of the next month, I'll post more of our photos from the trip. And soon, PUPPY PHOTOS!

Success Journal

Vicki Hinze and I created a spiral-bound Success Journal that we're really excited about! Read all about it on Vicki's blog.

Both of us believe in to-do lists, but we wanted so much more and couldn't find it on the market. We sat down after a conference a couple of weeks ago and worked out what we needed. We brainstormed inspiring thoughts to keep us pointed toward success. And while our Success Journal is great for writers, it's also great for anyone else, too!
